SpongeBob SquarePants: The Patrick Star Game is an open-world game where you explore Bikini Bottom as Patrick. Drive boats, complete quests, and explore iconic locations as everyone’s favorite sea star. Okay, maybe not everyone, because in recent seasons Patrick has become overly obnoxious, but you get what I’m saying!

The Patrick Star Game is a physics-based game where you complete quests to get tokens and use those tokens to buy outfits. The gameplay is extremely basic and very straightforward.

Bikini Bottom Brought to Life

Bikini Bottom is recreated beautifully, from the colors to the sounds and even the boats and locations. Outright Games did a fantastic job of bringing the location to life in a way that feels natural. The flow of the streets is great, and passing iconic locations, even though you can’t enter them, is extremely fun.

The graphics are okay; you won’t get anything as sharp as Cosmic Shake here. At points, the game world did look and feel a little washed out, especially in Glove World. Where Bikini Bottom shines is the locations you get to experience. The Krusty Krab, Chum Bucket, and much more are here, and there is normally a quest or mini game associated with each location.

Make Krabby Patties and serve customers!

Speaking of the mini games, there is plenty to do for what the game offers, but not enough to do for the price point. The Patrick Star Game is $39.99, while the content you get in the game would amount to something in the $20.00 price range. Getting this game on sale is a must. I bring this up because the game feels alright otherwise, but the price feels like a complete mismatch from the content.

The mini games are designed well and are thematic. From cooking Krabby Patties to using the leaf blower to clear space for Squidward, the Patrick Star game is jam-packed with references that fans of the show will enjoy.

Physics and Mechanics

The Patrick Star Game is a physics-based game, and it doesn’t do the physics portion very well. For whatever reason, nearly everything is stronger than Patrick, so it makes running around and doing stupid stunts rather cumbersome. Even when you’re driving, it feels like everything on the map is meant to send you flying away.

One aspect of the gameplay that was a pleasant surprise is just how good driving your boat feels. It could be better, but it could also be so much more. I had a lot of fun just zooming around the map and completing races. The controls could be tighter for sure, but for the type of game, the controls are passable.

What’s not passable, though, is the lack of things to do with Patrick. You can pick up and use items to wack things, and for the most part, the world is interactable, but Patrick feels boring to play as. Unlike SpongeBob, he can’t make fun shapes with his body, and therefore, a lot of gameplay potential is lost with him as the main character.

Final Thoughts

The Patrick Star Game is full of fun references that fans of the show will love. I know I do, and I rewatch seasons 1-5 every year at minimum. Getting to see SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward’s houses together was a real treat, and the mini games attached to each were quick but fun.

I do wish there was more to do with Patrick and that he felt stronger in the environment. While the environments themselves are relatively interactive, you’ll find that they can be beaten quickly and with little effort.

A highlight is Glove World, which has rides and games that are usable. The rest of the areas, while true to the TV show, are lackluster and could’ve used a bit more time to cook.

– Fun easter eggs to the TV show and lots of familiar locations and faces to see and interact with.

– Patrick makes for a boring protagonist because of his lack of moves and abilities.

– Everything in the environment is stronger than Patrick, making it difficult to pull off wacky stunts.

– Mini games are fun for what they are.

– The Patrick Star Game is slightly overpriced for the amount of content it offers.
