This comic starts with Dr. James Whiteman getting a visit from Tom. So it takes place well before the expedition crew takes off. We also get a view of the Endurance, which we will likely examine more closely when I review the concept art.
We can also see how the crew reacts to Whiteman; Lara is a fan. We also get a glimpse of Sam in her swimsuit; she is much more laid-back here, which makes sense. She geeks out over a camera, which I thought was adorable. Lara tries to rein her in a bit so they can keep shooting. We also learn that technically, Sam isn’t one of the crew; she was just tagging along.
Key takeaways right now are that Captain Conrad Roth and Mr. Angus Grimaldi have been doing expeditions together for over twenty years. We get to read about what happened in Somalia, which, of course, ended in a shootout and a successful escape.
At this point, Roth has to call in Reyes because the ship is breaking down. She is pissed to be called because she is with Alisha, her daughter. But she does agree to come. We get to learn more about her background. Her daughter knows Roth and Lara. Reyes quit the N.Y.P.D. over an apparent gang shooting, which she is quick to set the record straight about. Her partner was gunned down, and the people who shot him got away with it. Reyes handled it herself, moved in with her sister, and worked in her brother’s garage. She met Roth at a bar, and they ended up talking after she clocked him in his jaw.
So after that conversation, we learn that Whiteman got the funding for season three of his show pulled. We learn that he cheated on his wife and that she is selling all of his things. Which I understand, she doesn’t trust him to sell them himself, but I think that is foolish. There is no way she is getting a good price on these things, but whatever. He tries to sell some Chinese artifacts and nearly gets his head beaten in.
Whiteman gets lucky because Roth sent Jonah to check up on him. Turns out Roth knew that funding was cut. So now everyone knows. Alex arrives, hoping Roth will shelter him, and boy, do I miss this character.
Some other things we learn are that Lara tied up her family’s money. Roth said it’s tied up so tightly that she can’t touch it even if she wanted to. Also, Sam called Lara sweetie, which I love. Sam’s uncle is going to cover the rest of the funding, which means the trip is on. This is also how Sam becomes the camerawoman.
